KILIMANJARO

Machame route

OVERVIEW

A Breathtaking Adventure

On Kilimanjaro, the Machame route, commonly known as the “Whiskey” route, is the most popular. Machame’s allure lies in its natural beauty. However, because of its small length, the trail is considered rough, steep, and demanding. As a result, this path is ideal for people who are more adventurous or have some high altitude, trekking, or backpacking expertise. Mandara and Kibo Huts each have 60 bunk beds, while Horombo Hut has 120 bunk beds. Mattresses and pillows are provided, but sleeping bags are still necessary. The huts all include shared dining halls and basic washrooms, with flushing toilets and running water in the lower huts and lengthy drop toilets and buckets of water in Kibo Hut.

HOW IT GOES

The Machame route, starting at Machame Gate, approaches Kilimanjaro from the south, passing through rainforests to Shira Plateau. Connecting with the Southern Circuit, it ascends via Barafu, descending on the Mweka Route. Offered by Tanzania Classic Tours, it can be a seven-day group or a six-day private climb.
